Mother’s Day Card

For some reasons, the first or second Sunday of May, 2017 is being celebrated as Mother's Day worldwide . That smells like the art and fragrance of global marketing or Globalisation.

The natural instinct of sheep is to graze at will on green pastures under the deep blue skies. However, sheep becomes the herd when it blindly follows the Shepherd.

During January 1958, I was studying in the Graduate School @ University of Mississippi, Oxford, Mississippi, while my parents were living in Gondar, Ethiopia where my Father was pursuing his passion for teaching English, post his retirement years in India.

Following the traditional Mother’s Day in US,  I had purchased a colorful 5”x7” Hallmark greeting card to wish my Mother a happy Mother's day. I had mailed the greeting card bearing poetic words about motherhood via registered Air-Mail to ensure that the card reaches my Mother in far off Gondar. Three weeks later, my Mother wrote to me “ We have received your letter along with the big card. I do not understand what the card means “. My Mother was a fully literate college graduate who had earned a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts after bearing five children. The bombastic and hollow message of the fancy Mother’s Day Card did not make much sense to her. In normal Indian cultural habits, Mother and Child do not thank each other verbally; it is invariably communicated nonverbally through individual specific body language of gratitude.

Gradually the newer world has changed globally in which everyone seems to Ape everyone else except their sincere and natural instincts. It is cherished as Globalization with an air of presumed superiority.

Today in the second week of May, 2017, I am tempted to jot down the following thoughts at my age of 84+:

Life supports Life.

Within each one of us, there is an ever present child that needs and longs to be held in motherly embrace. Consequently, each day is Mother’s Day to behold and to be held in sheer gratitude for the opportunity of being and becoming.

Mother or Mother-hood is symbolic of an ever present comforter within which we feel the warmth and bliss of existence.

Concluding with a self enriching quote from the book titled Many Faces of Women by Usha Deo " The word Woman is inclusive of Man, which makes us all complete".

  2. I understand how Aii felt baba, mother's day is just a reminder of celebrating your mom (or parent) which should be an every-day emotion, not a hollow once-a-year event. Thought you might find this article interesting - History of Mother's Day
